The Treasury Department has extended the deadline for the public to place orders for commemorative coins and medals to be minted in celebration of the coronation of His Majesty the King, which will take place in early May.

Department director-general Amnuay Preemonwong said tomorrow's deadline for people to make reservations will be extended until May 10 after the conclusion of the coronation ceremonies, which will be held from May 4-6, so that the public will have more time to buy them.

The coins are made of gold, silver or cupronickel. The medals consist of platinum, silver and copper. The commemorative gold coins have a face value of 19,000 baht and will be sold for 40,000 baht each. The silver coins have a face value of 1,000 baht and are priced at 3,000 baht, and cupronickel coins are priced at their face value of 20 baht.

All coins are made to order with a maximum production of 50,000 for the gold type, 100,000 for silver and 5 million for cupronickel.

The platinum medals are the most expensive at 1 million baht, a record price since the Treasury Department began minting coins and medals. The platinum medals' production is capped at 1,000 units. Polished silver medals are priced at 5,000 baht each, while copper medals cost 3,000 baht. Their production volume is capped at 100,000 units each.

Plain silver medals with a ribbon band are priced at 1,600 baht each and limited to a mint of 500,000 units.

Mr Amnuay said the department has been granted royal approval for the commemorative coins and medals' designs.

However, the designs cannot be revealed until after the enactment of a royal decree and ministerial regulations governing the issuance of the coins and medals is announced in the Royal Gazette by April 23, Mr Amnuay said.

According to the Treasury Department, the public can place orders until May 10 at the department and its branch offices nationwide, including Krungthai Bank branches, Thailand Post offices and 7-Elevens.

Medals with a ribbon band can be reserved exclusively at the Treasury Department. The coins and medals will be distributed starting June 1.
