Officials will decide on Thursday on the future of the emergency decree, which is due to end on May 31, National Security Council secretary-general Somsak Roongsita said on Wednesday.

Gen Somsak said the meeting will comprise security officers and representatives from health and business sectors. Whether to extend the law will depend largely on the “actual Covid-19 situation”, he said.

The recent single-digit daily new infection numbers are a result of strict measures implemented under the decree last month, Gen Somsak added. Officials need to understand the facts on the ground before deciding on the next move.

The outcome of the meeting on Thursday will be forwarded to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Friday. The CCSA will then forward its recommendations to the cabinet for consideration next Tuesday.

The CCSA on Wednesday reported one new case of the coronavirus disease infection, a Thai chef who recently returned from Bahrain, raising the total to 3,034, and no new deaths.
