The labour minister will seek cabinet approval next week for the registration of illegal migrant workers to allay their fear that the government would prosecute them amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Labour Minister Suchart Chomklin said on Thursday that he and the interior minister agreed with the registration to dismiss illegal migrant workers' concerns and registered workers would be allowed to stay in the country temporarily.

Amid efforts to control the novel coronavirus, Mr Suchart said that employers would file the name lists of their illegal migrant workers online and they would have to pay for the Covid-19 tests on their employees in addition to registration fees.

The decision followed reports that an employer in Samut Sakhon started to abandon illegal migrants outside the province.
