Students wanted over salvo

Police are seeking warrants for two Rajamangala University of Technology Tawan-ok students who led more than 50 others in firing gunshots into the air on university grounds.

The incident occurred on Wednesday morning at the Pathumwan district campus to mark the university's 88th anniversary which fell on Tuesday.

The Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) commissioner, Pol Lt Gen Samran Nualma, said warrants were being sought for the two students but that some others have already turned themselves in over the incident.

Pol Lt Gen Samran led 80 officers in searching the campus again yesterday and found different types of weapons hidden in a bag left unattended at a building just off Phaya Thai Road.

MPB deputy commissioner, Pol Maj Gen Jirasan Kaewsang-ek, said 54 suspects have been identified over the incident, including current students and alumni.

Police first searched the campus on Wednesday after a video showing a group of university students firing guns into the air went viral online.

Pathumwan police superintendent, Pol Col Pansa Amarapitak, said his officers found 15 9-millimetre bullet casings and three 32mm casings on a field on the campus grounds.

A large number of knives was also found, a source said.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said school executives and education agencies must take responsibility for violence on campus grounds.

"Violence in technical colleges has been an issue for a long time and it has never been solved," Gen Prayut commented.
