Diplomats tour Isan

The Thailand Cultural Ministry is forging ties with 28 countries via a cultural trip for the diplomatic corps.

The ministry is holding the trip for staff working at diplomatic missions in Thailand from today until Friday. It is taking staff from 28 missions to Udon Thani and Nong Bua Lamphu provinces to experience the local way of life and cultural activities.

Yuthika Isarangkura, ministry deputy permanent secretary, said the trip had been organised since 2008. It includes visits to World Heritage sites, and includes chances to inspect the arts, artefacts, local cuisines and folk wisdom.

Udon Thani is best known for its its archeological wonders, especially Ban Chiang archeological site, which has been listed as a Unesco World Heritage site since 1992. Nong Bua Lamphu is also steeped in cultural attractions and handicraft villages, she said.

The diplomatic guests were to visit Phu Prabhut historical park, Ban Non Kok traditional weaving centre, and Bang Chiang national museum and Pho Sri Nai temple in Udon Thani. They were also to visit the Khwanta learning and design centre to learn about the eco-printing of scarves.

Thanadon Puttarak, the mayor of Udon Thani city, said Udon Thani is also equipped with hotels, golf courses, racecourses, and an international airport.
