A woman was missing following a night of heavy rain that triggered flash floods in the northern province of in Mae Hong Son.

Hours of downpours triggered runoff from the Mae Sa Ngee and Mae Sa Nga streams, inundating a village in tambon Huai Pha of Muang district, local disaster prevention and mitigation officials reported on Saturday.

The deluge resulted in the disappearance of a 39-year-old woman and caused significant damage to six houses along with 300 sacks of rice, two trucks, 10 motorcycles, two tractors and many livestock.

An operation has been launched to find the missing woman and rescue the livestock, with assistance being expedited.

Local residents last saw the missing woman as she was attempting to navigate the floodwaters on her motorcycle, but they were unable to prevent her from being swept away.

In Tham Pla-Namtok Pha Suea National Park, the rising waters toppled walls and bridges, temporarily trapping five park staff and local residents before they were rescued.

Some villagers in tambon Mok Cham Pae had to climb trees when torrents suddenly swept through the area. The floodwaters also uprooted trees and displaced boulders, blocking Highway 1095, the main road linking Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai.

Sukila Suwattanamethee, deputy chief of the Huai Pha Tambon Administrative Organisation, said the situation was dire, with extensive damage to public utilities, buildings, houses, farms and livestock.

Provincial and district authorities are working urgently to alleviate the calamity.
