Police have been asked to investigate whether high-level officials had permitted the sale of up to 75 tonnes of rotting beef at markets.

Activist Atchariya Ruangratanapong on Monday asked the Central Investigation Bureau to take legal action against two shipping companies and five senior officials of the Livestock Development Department.

He said they were suspected of releasing about 75 tonnes of rotting beef to markets for sale.

The beef was stored in three containers that were impounded for examination at Laem Chabang port in Chon Buri province in 2018.

In 2020, the officials permitted two importing companies to retrieve the beef for sale at local markets.

Mr Atchariya said that most of the beef was already rotten.
