A family of three clouded leopards have been spotted in the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary forest in Chachoengsao.

A camera trap captured the three animals on the night of Dec 25, and the sanctuary posted a picture and two short video clips of them walking past the camera on Monday.

Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary chief Weerapong Korawat said the clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) is a type of big cat that likes living in dense forests.

It was the second such sighting that month after another one of the rare animals was captured by a camera trap in Thap Lan National Park, which is part of the forest complex of Khao Yai National Park, on Dec 19.

The latest sightings bode well for the conservation efforts of Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary and Chachoengsao Wildlife Research Station, he said, adding it also reflects the state of forest reserves in the eastern region.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature classifies the clouded leopard as a vulnerable species.

They are also listed as a protected species by the Wild Animal Conservation and Protection Act BE 2562 (2019).
