Phumtham to see top brass

Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai says he will meet armed forces chiefs to brief them on the government's plans.

Mr Phumtham said after being appointed to oversee the Ministry of Defence that he would schedule meetings with the heads of the army, navy, and air force to talk about protocols and government policy.

"As a deputy prime minister, I will listen, coordinate and make the right decisions for the sake of the nation," said Mr Phumtham, adding, "I will hear the opinions of all parties."

He also said he would meet the military chiefs at their places of work rather than inviting them to come see him.

"I do not intend to act like a boss," he said in response to a question about whether he would step in to block the appointment of generals or procurement initiatives.

"I just want them to help brainstorm how to solve national problems."

When asked if the Ministry of Defence Organisation Act should be amended to prevent coups, Mr Phumtham said, "I haven't looked into the details, so it's not the time to think about the matter. I would want to talk about this with Defence Minister Sutin Klungsang first.

"Right now, we do not have any coup worries as we are a civilian government working with every party. We can work effectively with the armed forces," he said.

"We are determined to work for the country and will listen and coordinate with all sectors. Everything must be according to policies submitted before parliament," he added.
