'Ung-ing' top choice for PM: poll

Paetongtarn "Ung-ing" Shinawatra of the Pheu Thai Party is still the most popular choice for the post of prime minister, according to an opinion survey by the National Institute of Development Administration, or Nida Poll.

The poll was conducted on Dec 17-22 via telephone with 2,000 people aged 18 and over to gauge the popularity of potential candidates for the post of prime minister in the next election.

About 34% of participants voted for the daughter of fugitive and former PM Thaksin for the premier position because they liked the party's policy, wanted a new generation to govern the country and liked the performance of the two governments run under the Shinawatras in the past.

Coming in at second with 14.4% was Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha of the United Thai Nation Party -- as people saw him as an honest leader who can create peace in the country.

Following him, neck and neck, was Move Forward's Pita Limjaroenrat (13.25%) whom the survey respondents chose because they want to give the new generation a chance to run the country and because they also liked his party's progressive policy.
