2 months, fine for driving on railtrack

The North Bangkok District Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to four months in jail and a fine of 10,000 baht for drink driving along a railway track and violating the traffic law.

The prison term was reduced to two months, suspended for two years, and the fine to 5,000 baht because he confessed.

The court placed Korakot Rakwongpat on parole for one year, reporting to parole officers four times, and ordered he do 24 hours of community service.

The court was told that on Monday night, Oct 14, Korakot, 24, while drunk, drove a new Honda CRV car down the rail track, from near Khlong Tan railway station and along Kamphaeng Phet 7 road in Bang Kapi area of Huay Khwang district.

A breathalyser test revealed Korakot had 148 milligrammes per cent of alcohol in his blood, exceeding the 50 milligrammes per cent limit for driving.

Korakot's car became stuck on the rail track and delayed a train for 107 minutes at Makkasan station.

State Railway of Thailand governor Prapas Chongsanguan said on Monday anyone who causes a train to be delayed for three hours or more is liable to a fine of 800 baht per minute.

Since Korakot caused a delay of less than three hours, he would not be fined, but would be required to compensate the SRT for damages from lost fares.
