Berliner Philharmoniker makes Bangkok debut

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Berliner Philharmoniker, one of the world's most elite ensembles, will be performing in Bangkok for the first time at Prince Mahidol Hall, Mahidol University, Salaya campus, on Nov 9 from 7.30pm.

Following successful concerts by the London Symphony Orchestra in June, this is another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Thai audiences to experience the very best in classical music. The 136-year-old Berliner Philharmoniker is reputed for its beautiful tone, creative colours and commitment to the highest artistic standards.

Starting off as a self-governing body in 1882, with many capable principal conductors leaving their distinctive marks on the orchestra's long history, the ensemble is today recognised as one of the world's greatest.

In 2007, the orchestra and its artistic director Sir Simon Rattle, who had pushed the orchestra to reach a wider and younger audience, were appointed Unicef Goodwill Ambassadors, the first artistic ensemble ever to represent the international children's organisation. In 2008, they were voted the world's No.2 orchestra by British magazine Gramophone. For the upcoming show, the Berlin-based ensemble will perform Mahler's Symphony No.5, one of the world's most beloved symphonic works, in five movements, and Divertimento, a significant composition by American composer Leonard Bernstein.

Leading the orchestra will be distinguished conductor Gustavo Dudamel, making his Bangkok debut. The 37-year-old Venezuelan maestro boasts a remarkable career of musical achievement and is renowned for championing access to the arts for young people around the world.

His 2018-19 season centres on the centennial celebration of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and his year as their music and artistic director.
