The air pollution we're facing today is the subject of a group exhibition titled "Smog Day" which is running on the 1st floor of Show DC, Rama IX Road, until Feb 21.

Presented by Palette Artspace, the exhibition brings a collection of 25 paintings, photographs and installations by 10 artists who reflect their perspectives on our lives today and the ongoing air pollution caused by PM2.5.

Derived from the words smoke and fog, smog is severe air pollution. The exhibition's title pays tribute to the loss of many lives in two historic smog disasters in the Western world.

The first is the 1948 Donora Smog which was considered the worst air pollution disaster in US history. It killed 20 people and caused respiratory problems to 7,000 of the 14,000 people living in Donora, Pennsylvania.

The second is the Great Smog of London in 1952, where up to 12,000 people died as a direct result of the deadly smog.

Over the past decades, Thailand has faced less severe toxic haze than other countries. However, our air pollution continues to become increasingly drastic in winter due to many factors caused by humans including crop-burning for agricultural activities, factory fumes, car exhaust smoke and climate change.

The aim of this art show is to raise public awareness on this problem and to get us to realise that while we might not feel it immediately, the pollution will certainly affect our lives in the long run.

Participating artists include Kyoko Abe, Supmanee Chai, Chakphattara Ruangyos and Garn Phakathunya.
