"deTour 2021", a famous design festival in Hong Kong, has recently put the curtain down on its physical exhibitions, however, its virtual interactive exhibitions remain open for viewing until the end of this year to encourage design enthusiasts from afar to actively rethink the very basic functions of design.

Held under the theme "Use(fu)less" to celebrate the works and ideas of Hong Kong and overseas designers and creative talent, the annual event invites both the public and design professionals to engage and experience design in various perspectives.

Available for digital visitors to explore the unwavering role of design for a better tomorrow are three main exhibitions and 12 design dialogues.

"Red Silk Of Fate -- The Shrine" is an international collaboration between Japanese-British artist Sputniko! and a Hong Kong architectural design team.

They fuse design with biotechnology to bring a new meaning to the red silk thread, which is a common symbol in Chinese, Japanese and Korean mythologies to connect people who are destined to be together.

The second exhibition features four design installations that present the power of collaboration. They include Philosophy X Design: I Know Not What Cafe, Sound X Design: The Interpreter, Typography X Design: Type–11, and Sports X Design: Strong Hold Pavilion. The last exhibition comprises 10 selected entries from over 120 design proposals, from Hong Kong's design groups who share creative concepts covering the living environment, technology, interpersonal relationships and spatial design.

There is also a special exhibition by sci-fi artist Lucy McRae who touches on the future state of humankind through installations, photography, artificial intelligence, edible technology and film. All 12 design dialogues are ready for live relay and easily accessed via YouTube.

There is no admission fee. Visit detour.hk/2021/en.
