Cinema operators are being warned to check viewers' IDs to make sure they are 18 or older if they want to see the remake of the controversial erotic drama Jan Dara.
Any cinemas found breaching the rule on random ID inspections will face fines of 20,000 baht per day, said Somchai Seanglai, the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Culture.
Jan Dara Pathombot (The Chapter of Jan Dara) earned an 18+ rating from the censorship board.
Directed by ML Bhandevanop Devakula, the 2012 version of Jan Dara is the third version of the Usana Ploengtham's erotic and darkly satirical book set in the 1930s.
The last adaptation, by Nonzee Nimibutr in 2001, starred Hong Kong actress Christy Chung and its sex scenes tested the bounds of the 1930 Film Act.
The new version stars Mario Maurer in the title role, Sakaraj Rirkthamrong, Bongkot Khongmalai, Savika Chaiyadej and Ratha Pho-ngarm.
