Siamese Fighting Fish, a face mask design by Waraporn Mamee from Thailand, is one of the top 10 finalists of the "APAC Mask Design Competition", which is inviting everyone to vote for the best design until this Sunday.

A former product designer who is now professor of art and design at Naresuan University, Waraporn is among nine peers from six countries who entwined their positive memories and heartfelt background stories on their creative designs.

Organised under the theme of "There's Strength In Memory" last November by Kingston and CSD, the competition attracted more than 3,100 entries from design enthusiasts from 12 countries across the Asia-Pacific region.

The competitors comprise top artists and designers from various fields including product, textile, visual art and multimedia art; as well as illustrators, art students and professors.

The top 10 designs are divided into two categories. Five of them are of the "3-Colors" category, which limits designs to using only three colours. The designs include:

  Perfect Imperfections by Aljohn M Matias from the Philippines who uses a minimalistic approach to depict his collective experiences of meeting diverse groups of people over the years;

  Siamese Fighting Fish by Waraporn who uses the betta species to signify her ambition and persistence on her quest to grow as an artist;

  Lips & Water Chestnut by Wu Bo Yi from Taiwan who took the inspiration from the contrast of conceptual familiarity and childhood memories;

  Doodling Paper by Nguyen Dang Binh from Vietnam who depicts funny faces to show all the happy times of his college days; and

  Sparkling Lenses by Rishabh Raj from India who is inspired by his memory of celebrations and festivals.

The other five finalists are of the "Unlimited Colors" category. They include:

  Love Memories Forever by Lilo Jong from Malaysia who portrays her deep-rooted emotion of missing her family;

  Construct X Deconstruction by Brenca Sun from Taiwan who visualises the concept of memory into a form of space and presents a magical paradise that stores the happy memories in her mind;

  Summer Memories In The Wonder Garden by Hsu, Hsing-Chen from Taiwan whose vision of summer leaves an indelible imprint in the memories of everyone who sees it;

  Breath Of Energy by Tsuyoshi Artman from Japan who emphasises the importance of "breathing" with pop art-styled illustrations of plants and greenery to make people stronger mentally; and

  Monster Nation by Yman.S from Malaysia who pays homage to the fighting spirit of the people with his cute little monsters.
