The Michelin Guide Thailand announced yesterday a selection of the country's best dining establishments through an online broadcast, dubbed "Michelin Star Revelation 2022 Thailand Virtual Press Conference".

The latest edition of the guide, a freshly renewed five-year collaboration between the Michelin Guide and the Tourism Authority of Thailand, includes the star rating for Bangkok, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Phangnga.

A total of 38 stars were awarded to 32 restaurants. Of them, six restaurants were awarded two stars and 26 restaurants earned one star. No three stars were awarded this year.

Retaining their two-star distinction were Chef's Table restaurant, Le Normandie French restaurant, Mezzaluna French-Japanese restaurant, R-Haan Thai restaurant, Sorn southern Thai cuisine restaurant and Sühring German restaurant.

Twenty veteran restaurants and six newcomers received one star.

Fresh to this year's list were Aksorn, a one-of-a-kind brainchild of Thai cuisine master chef David Thompson; Côte by Mauro Colagreco, a French restaurant at Capella Bangkok; Gaa modern Indian cuisine restaurant; Igniv, a modern European cuisine restaurant by globally acclaimed chef Andreas Caminada; Savelberg French restaurant (relocation); and Yu Ting Yuan, a Chinese restaurant at Four Seasons Bangkok.

All the star-studded restaurants are in Bangkok, except Pru, which is located at the Trisara resort in Phuket.

This year Garima Arora of Gaa restaurant was awarded the Young Chef Award. While the Michelin Guide Service Award 2022 was granted to Thibaud Charlemarty, the general manager of Côte by Mauro Colagreco.

Pru also retained its Michelin Green Star distinction. The award reflects the establishment's efforts in operating at the forefront of their field with sustainable gastronomy practices as well as those who fulfil the role of bringing forth their vision. Pru's philosophy includes minimising its carbon footprint and reducing chemical use and food waste while preserving local agricultural biodiversity.

The event also revealed 133 restaurants, street food venues and hawker stalls that received the Bib Gourmand recognition. Of them, 71 are located in Bangkok, 23 in Chiang Mai, 29 in Phuket and Phangnga, and 10 in Ayutthaya.

Spanning a mix of eating joints, the Bib Gourmand recognition includes the like of chicken rice shops, gluay khaek (deep-fried banana) shop, rice congee shops and roti sai mai (cotton candy roll) shops.
