Sorn debuts at No.39 on World’s 50 Best

LONDON — Making it’s debut being the highest new entry at No.39 on the World’s 50 Best restaurant 2022 list, is no other than Bangkok favourite, Sorn.

Chef Supaksorn “Ice”Jongsiri told the Bangkok Post last night at the awards ceremony held in London, “We are excited about this recognition, especially on the world stage. This is not a victory for southern Thai food alone, it is a victory for cuisines from all over the country, be it from the North, Northeast, Central or South. The food in Thailand is great. So this is about all Thai food. But, none of this would be achievable without the Thai farmers, Thai fisherman and everybody who has worked hard, especially the Sorn team. We are here now, but we definitely won’t be the last Thai chefs or restaurant to grace the list. Thai food is good enough for the world; no more f***ing wagyu and uni. Thank you!”

Taking the No.1 spot and named the best restaurant in the world is Geranium in Copenhagen, Denmark, followed by Central in Lima, Peru, who was also named South America’s best restaurant. No.3 on the list was Disfrutar ib Barcelona, Spain. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards 2022 was hosted by renowned actor and gourmand Stanley Tucci, and honoured gastronomic excellence from 24 territories across five continents. Asia was recognised as a culinary powerhouse, with Tokyo’s Den named the Best Restaurant in Asia at No.20.

René Frank of Coda, Berlin, is the World's Best Pastry Chef, while a new award for 2022, the Beronia World's Best Sommelier title went to Josep Roca, sommelier and co-owner of El Celler de Can Roca, Girona, Spain. Jorge Vallejo, chef-owner of Quintonil (No.9) in Mexico City won the  the Estrella Damm Chefs’ Choice Award and Aponiente in the south-west of Spain took home the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award. The evening also celebrated the Champions of Change winners: Dieuveil Malonga, Koh Seng Choon and duo Olia Hercules and Alissa Timoshkina; Leonor Espinosa, the World's Best Female Chef; social entrepreneur Wawira Njiru, winner of the Icon Award; and Marseille restaurant AM par Alexandre Mazzia, winner of the American Express One To Watch Award.
