The parents of 23-year-old Japanese tourist Tomoko Kawashita, who was slain in Sukhothai more than seven years ago, have asked the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) to hurry up and find her killer.

Yasuaki Kawashita and Eko Kawashita met DSI director-general Suwana Suwanjuta on Thursday morning to request a progress report on the investigation into the murder of their daughter in Sukhothai Historical  Park in November 2007.

The DSI accepted the case for special investigation in 2013.

Mr Kawashita said he expected the DSI would be able to solve the case eventually and arrest the murderer for punishment. He was informed that a bounty of 500,000 baht was on offer for anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest of the killer.

Mr Kawashita said he did not know who the killer is, but suspected the person lived in Saphan Hin of Sukhothai. Police have still not tracked down Tomoko Kawashita's camera, which went missing when she was killed and might hold some clues in the stored images.

The 23-year-old travelled to Thailand and sent photos back to her Japanese friends, mentioning that Thai people were good and she had a lot of fun travelling in Thailand. Mr Kawashita said he felt sad that his daughter was killed in a country she had such good feelings for.

He has urged Thai authorities to speed up the investigation, arrest the killer and close the case.
