Thai League 1 side Chiang Rai United drew 1-1 with Japan's Gamba Osaka in Group H of the AFC Champions League on Sunday night to keep alive their hopes of reaching the last 16.

In the other game in Group H, which is being staged in Uzbekistan, South Korea's Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors thrashed Singapore's Tampines Rovers 4-0.

After four matches, Jeonbuk have 10 points, Gamba six, Chiang Rai five and Tampines zero.

The five group winners and three best runners-up in the east zone advance to the knockout stages.

At Lokomotiv Stadium, a sixth-minute strike by Felipe Amorim gave Chiang Rai the lead only for teammate Brinner to turn the ball into his own net in the 54th minute.

Chiang Rai coach Alongkorn Thong-Am was delighted with the result after the Beetles had also held the Japanese club to a 1-1 draw last week.

"I am very proud of my team. Everybody was looking for a win. They worked extremely hard," he said.

"It was about the little details. We made some small mistakes and there were things we could have done better during the match, but we can't go back now and change the result. Overall, this was a result we can be happy with."

Gamba coach Masanobu Matsunami said: "We had to get three points. It was a must-win game for us, but we started off badly and we conceded early, which wasn't in our plans."

The fate of both sides could be sealed tomorrow with Chiang Rai facing group leaders Jeonbuk, and Gamba taking on Tampines.

Meanwhile, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced yesterday this year's knockout matches will be played over single legs from the quarter-finals onwards because of the coronavirus pandemic, rather than the usual home and away format.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals will now take place in October in one centralised venue for the east and west zone respectively, the AFC said.

The final will be played on Nov 23 in a venue in the west zone, rather than over two legs as originally planned. The venues have not yet been announced.
