Pathum keen to play party poopers role

Holders BG Pathum United vow to get a result at Buriram United tomorrow to delay the Thunder Castle's Thai League 1 title celebration.

Leaders Buriram are 12 points ahead of second-ranked Pathum with five games remaining.

Buriram will be crowned champions if they beat the Rabbits at Chang Arena.

Pathum coach Makoto Tekuramori said yesterday he and his men would do their best to prevent Buriram from winning the title tomorrow.

"We don't want them to celebrate winning the title in front of us," said the Japanese, who joined Pathum a few weeks ago.

"It will be a challenging match for us. Right now, my players have begun to understand my style."

He said although he has never met Buriram boss and compatriot Masatada Ishii, he knows him well because he has coached several clubs in Japan and Thailand.

Pathum's attack will be led by former Buriram striker Diogo Luis Santo.

Ishii, meanwhile, said Buriram must try to win the Thai League 1 title after losing to South Korea's Daegu on penalties following a 1-1 draw in an AFC Champions League play-off game in midweek.

"It is important for our team to regain confidence after we failed to reach the group stage of the AFC Champions League," he said.

"Our goal is to win the Thai League 1 title and we are looking forward to the match against Pathum."

Buriram's strike force will be spearheaded by in-form forwards Jonathan Bolingi and Supachai Chaided.

Buriram said yesterday there were a number of Covid-19 cases in the team and urged fans to strictly follow health and safety protocols.
