Supanida, Aimsaard sisters advance in New Delhi meet

Supanida Katethong and women's doubles pair Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard advanced to the quarter-finals of the US$900,000 India Open in New Delhi yesterday.

However, Ratchanok Intanon and mixed doubles stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai made early exits at the World Tour Super 750 event.

Supanida defeated Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-17, 21-14 and will next play either Olympic champion Chen Yufei of China or Saina Nehwal of India.

Defending champions Benyapa and Nuntakarn moved through safely, defeating seventh seeds Lee So-Hee and Shin Seung-Chan of South Korea 21-18, 21-19.

They next face second seeds Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida of Japan in the last eight.

In the women's singles event, Ratchanok went down to Carolina Marin 21-16, 21-16 and the Spaniard goes on to meet Japanese top seed Akane Yamaguchi, who defeated China's Han Yue 21-14, 21-17.

In the mixed doubles event, Dechapol and Sapsiree were stunned by Kim Won-Ho and Jeong Na-Eun of South Korea 21-14, 19-21, 21-17.

Women's singles stars Busanan Ongbamrungphan, the defending champion, and eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong were to square off against each other while Kunlavut Vitidarn was to meet Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the men's singles late last night.

In other men's singles results, Viktor Axelsen of Denmark beat Shi Yuqi of China, Jonatan Christie of Indonesia defeated Zhao Junpeng of China and Chou Tuen-chen beat Taiwanese compatriot Wang Tzu-wei.
