New app to help solve disappearance cases

GENERAL

An application is being launched on Wednesday that will help people report missing people and unidentified bodies.

The Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) has developed an app called "U Nai" (Where Are You?) to centralise information and thus provide for faster identification of those involved.

Since 2015, the CIFS has collected vast amounts of information through its work in storing bodies and investigating missing people.

Included in its records are fingerprints, the facial and body features of the missing people and, in the case of unidentified bodies, the cause of death.

CIFS director Songsak Raksaksakul said the institute's database currently has records on 3,170 missing people and 5,360 unclaimed bodies.

Of the bodies, 2,643 have been positively identified and the institute also keeps about 1,500 skeletons, which have not been identified.

Many more identified bodies are being stored at the Sawang Foundation in Nakhon Nayok.

Pol Col Songsak added that the system of identification would be streamlined further if and when a draft bill, now before parliament, on the prevention of torture and enforced disappearance is enacted.

"The app will be a basic channel through which information is reported," he said.
