New state attorney 'to build trust'

Newly appointed Attorney-General Singchai Thaninson yesterday laid down his work policy as he pledged to build public trust and confidence in administering justice.

Singchai: Stresses impartiality

Mr Singchai took the helm at the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) as the country's 16th attorney-general at a time when prosecutors faces a crisis of faith over the 2012 hit-and-run case involving Red Bull scion Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya.

Speaking before senior prosecutors at a meeting that was streamed live on YouTube, Mr Singchai said yesterday trust and confidence would lead to public acceptance and as part of the system the OAG was duty-bound to build public trust and confidence.

The new chief stressed that impartially administering justice, using innovations and technologies to drive development and promoting ethics and accountability were his key policy.

He said the prosecution would ensure impartial use of laws to advance public and national interest and provide legal aid and make it more accessible to the public.

He said the OAG would also make more use of information technologies including phone apps to provide legal assistance to people, and a mobile law office would also be introduced.

He said he would also work to enhance workforce capacity for greater efficiency and promote moral and ethical responsibility.

Mr Singchai, 64, was nominated for the post by the Public Prosecutor Commission in June to replace Wongsakul Kittipromwong. His nomination was subsequently approved by the Senate and royally endorsed.

He held a number of important positions within the OAG including chief of the Department of Criminal Litigation before being named for the top job. He is expected to serve until Sept 30, 2022.
