Width restrictions stymie three capital condo builds

The Thailand Consumer Council (TCC) has inspected three small roads, or sois, in two districts and found that soon-to-be-built condominium projects in each might breach the law.

TCC secretary-general Saree Aongsomwang led journalists to meet communities likely to suffer the impacts of the projects last Wednesday.

The findings concern the S project in Pradiphat Soi 23 in Phaya Thai district (219 units); and the S project in Ratchadaphisek Soi 44 (535 units) and The Muve project in Phahon Yothin Soi 37 (230 units), both of which are located in Chatuchak district.

Ms Saree said all three sois are less than six metres in width.

Based on the BMA regulations, big buildings of not more than 9,999m² must be built along roads that are at least six metres in width.

The TCC will gather information from locals to submit to the BMA and will also send the evidence to the National Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) committee of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

She said TCC will ask City Hall to revoke the three construction permits by next week as some locals do not want the projects to go ahead.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) director of building control, Surat Tirakul, who also joined the inspection, said he will gather information and feedback from the three local communities.

In addition, the BMA is considering revising construction-related laws so they focus on the benefits of local people first and foremost.
