TK Park invites teachers, parents and childcare workers to a live talk on "The Art Of Kamishibai", which will be presented online via the TK Park Facebook page and YouTube channel this weekend from 1pm to 2.30pm.

A collaboration with the Japan Foundation Bangkok, the live talk programme will tell why this centuries-old Japanese storytelling tradition is so special and why it still attracts a lot of audiences in spite of the ongoing high-tech developments.

Literally meaning "paper drama", kamishibai is a form of street theatre and storytelling that was popular during the 1930s and the post-war period in Japan. The story was told by a narrator using a set of story picture cards in a small wooden stage.

Two Japanese professional storytellers will share their experience with this charming art and how to incorporate it into lesson plans. They will also share storytelling techniques that can be useful for teachers, parents and childcare workers wishing to use kamishibai as a tool to teach and entertain kids.

Etsuko Nozaka, an international project supervisor from the International Kamishibai Association of Japan (Ikaja), will touch on the topic of "Performing Kamishibai" on Saturday.

She will show the differences between kamishibai and general storytelling and offer tips to boost concentration in children and keep their attention in a natural way.

On Sunday, Ritsuko Nagamuta, an editor from Doshinsha Publishing, Japan, will show techniques to harmoniously fuse pictures and words to create an imaginary world and also share how to use this form of art with young kids.

Both sessions will be conducted in Japanese with Thai interpretation.
