As one of Asia’s biggest music festivals, Summer Sonic has regional music lovers waiting with bated breath year in and year out for its line up. Thai fans have been flocking to the iconic festival for the past few years due to its proximity and accessibility, as well as stellar line up.

The Yers.

As usual, the two-day festival caters to wide array of musical tastes. This year’s line-up includes Arctic Monkeys, Queen with Adam Lambert, Robert Plant, Pixies, Phoenix, Avenged Sevenfold, The 1975, Megadeth, Kraftwerk, The Horrors, De La Soul, White Lies, CNBlue and FT Island, among many others.

More excitement, however, is in store at this year’s Summer Sonic Tokyo.

The Yers, P.O.P and Getsunova will play on the Island Stage, under an “Asian Calling” theme. The three Thai bands will share the stage with artists from China and Malaysia.

This isn’t the first time Thai artists have graced Summer Sonic. Yellow Fang and Gene Kasidit have played the festival in two separate years, albeit without much fanfare.

This year might prove different, with the three bands performing consecutively on the same bill and stage.

Members of P.O.P will bring their long years of experience in the music industry to the festival, as well as tossing a few additional members into the mix.

It’s been a long road for Getsunova to establish its name — and get rid of its “rich boy” reputation — but thanks to the breakthrough hit anthem, Klai Kae Nai Kue Klai (How Far Is Near?), the band is now one of the country’s favourites.

The youngest of the bunch, The Yers, remains humble.

“We’ve always wanted to go to Summer Sonic for as long as I can remember,” said vocalist/guitarist Yotsathorn Boonyatanapiwat. “I still can’t believe that we’re actually playing at one of the best known music festivals in the world, not just Asia. We’re very excited to play, and to watch bands that we love performing.”

“We’re rehearsing a lot now,” he added. “We want to perform the best we possibly can. We don’t expect anything in return. There might be no one watching us, but that doesn’t matter. If we can make one more person take notice of The Yers, I think I’ve accomplished something already.”

Summer Sonic Tokyo 2014 will be held Aug 16-17 at QVC Marine Field and Makuhari Messe in Tokyo, Japan. Visit www.summersonic.com.
