Bangkok and its emotions are presented in a series of photographs by Marcelo von Schwartz during "Bangkok Dreamscapes", which is running at RCB Galleria 3 of River City Bangkok, Charoen Krung 24, until Feb 17.
In the eyes of the Argentine architect-photographer, Bangkok is a giant that is constantly changing its skin and never stops growing and transforming. His photographs of the city are more than just images of places or buildings as he also captures the emotions lying beneath each place.
While most photographers reflect on what is apparent, Marcelo prefers to create an emotional bond with the buildings and the places he visits. That is why his work isn't a representation of a formal appearance but a recreation of a wide range of emotional inputs in another dimension, as if it's coming from a dream.
He also reflects on the tension of representing three-dimensions on a two-dimensional surface. Unlike Renaissance painters who strived to reproduce a world in which image and reality were indistinguishable, Marcelo tends to load all these recognisable images with many references to utopian -- and dystopian -- architectures.
In this exhibition, the transformations of the city are presented as if they were part of an infinite and incompressible narrative without beginning or end, more typical of a strange dream than of reality.
