New programme helps elderly find their potential

Art plays a big role in enhancing the well-being of seniors, which is why Singapore has its own festival that celebrates seniors and the possibilities that they can enjoy through the arts.

Back for the 10th edition with a blend of physical and digital programmes, the "Silver Arts 2021" benefits elderly outside the island nation as half of its more than 30 engaging programmes are presented online throughout this month.

Held under the theme "TENacity" by the National Arts Council, the festival delivers messages of hope and continued possibilities, exemplified by seniors and the arts community in Singapore in these difficult times.

This is also an opportunity for seniors in Thailand to discover their creative potential through activities across various genres presented by more than 120 artists and arts organisations in Singapore.

The first programme of the festival is Chap Lau, a radio series performed by the Glowers Drama Group, which is made up of more than 50 seniors in their 50s to 80s.

There are 10 episodes presented in two versions. The English version starts today and runs daily until Sept 11 at 10am (Bangkok time) while the Mandarin version will be presented from Sept 14 to 23.

Afterwards, the best of Singapore's arts and culture can be enjoyed from the comfort of your home in an exclusive scoop about the lives and careers of veteran singers like Rahimah Rahim and Iskandar Ismail in Songs In Our Lives (Sept 16) and a dynamic singing cook-along session in The Singing Chef by Irene Jansen and Family (Sept 19).

There will also be a series of artist-led workshops providing introductory lessons in lindy hop (Sept 2), handbells (Sept 5) and a cappella singing (Sept 9), among others.

Most digital programmes are in English and will be hosted on facebook.com/NACSingapore. The showtime is 2pm (Bangkok time).

Another highlight will be the "Silver Arts Exhibition" featuring new works from four of Singapore's unique artist-led community arts projects online, from Sept 26 to December.
