Sala Sudasiri Sobha on Lat Phrao 41 is hosting "Siam Romance", a charity concert featuring the latest compositions by Sun Thathong, a Thai diplomat and aspiring composer, on March 12 at 4pm.

The programme will feature the world's premiere of Sun's White Flowers Nos.1-12 and Isan Fantasies No.1 And No.2. He will perform the pieces on the piano and will be joined by two young Thai musicians -- Nattawut Sungkasaro (double bass) and Kant Lormsomboon (piano).

Written over a period of seven years from 2014 to 2021, White Flowers consists of 12 short pieces in all major keys. Each piece depicts the physique, cultural context and related stories of a white Thai flower, combined with the composer's own experiences. A Thai quatrain (four-lined poem) is given to each piece to denote its tone and mood.

Isan Fantasies, meanwhile, consists of 12 pieces in all minor keys. Inspired by the composer's hometown's music, the series will take the audience on a musical journey through the landscapes and traditions of northeastern Thailand.

Sun began composing in 2004 and has since written over 30 pieces for piano. His composition style is influenced by Thai folk, Thai pop and classical music.

Inspired by works of Chopin and Brahms and those of Thai composers, including Montri Tramote, Puangroi Apaiwong, Nat Yontararak and Dnu Huntrakul, Sun's compositions are characterised by soothing, voice-like Thai-style melodies infused with elements of romanticism.

Tickets cost 1,000 baht (500 baht for students). Proceeds will be donated to the Education for Development Foundation, which promotes equitable access to educational opportunities for underprivileged children and youth in Thailand and the Paintbrush Foundation, which provides free arts and music education for underprivileged children of the Klong Toey slum.
