A photographic print can last for a hundred years but slight fading might start to occur within 25 to 50 years. This is probably long enough for any individual to cherish the memories the photo evokes. But for pictures of revered historical figures, ceramics is a perfect medium as it can keep a photo alive for a thousand years.

This is the case in a special collection of ceramic art panels featuring images of Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi) presented by PixCera, a leading brand that brings the value and beauty of ceramics to another level by turning old images worthy of preserving onto ceramic panels that stand the test of time.

The brand has collaborated with world-renowned contemporary photographer, Chardchakaj Waikawee, to restore ancient images of the late monk, known as Somdet Wat Rakhang or Somdet To, who lived during the reigns of King Rama I to King Rama V and later became one of the most renowned monks widely revered by Thai Buddhists from the past to present.

The images are assumed to have used the wet plate collodion process in 1864 by Francis Chit, the first professional photographer in Thailand during the reign of King Rama IV (1851-1868). Only three images were found and Chardchakaj has printed the original ambrotypes in high resolution on premium ceramic panels, creating remarkable and auspicious pieces that help preserve a piece of history.

"I am confident that such rare and valuable images from over a century ago of Somdet Phra Phutthachan (To Phrommarangsi) have been brought back to life once again," Chardchakaj said about this special project with PixCera. "I want to make sure that they are well-preserved for the next generation to keep so that their historical value does not fade away with time," he added.

Ceramics have been chosen as the material for this project as it is durable and easy to maintain and the colour does not fade. Using advanced ceramic techniques, the outcome is a true legacy that can be passed on from generation to generation.
