After an all-online edition last year, KinoFest 2023 will take to cinemas this year, bringing close to 50 screenings of 13 movies to nine film venues in seven provinces across the country, starting tomorrow until Nov 5.

A joint production by eight Goethe-Instituts in Southeast Asia, the film festival is ahead of cinema releases in Asia and will present the latest German dramas, documentaries, comedies and thrillers. They explore the themes of migration, connection and interconnection, offering a nuanced and multifaceted view of Germany today.

The festival will open with Talking About The Weather, at Goethe-Institut Bangkok tomorrow at 7pm. Directed by Annika Pinske, the drama centres around a woman caught in contradictions on her quest for independence.

This year's highlight is Christian Petzold's long awaited drama Afire which follows the escalating dynamics of a group of friends trapped by a nearby wildfire.

Other films in the programme will be We Might As Well Be Dead, directed by Natalia Sinelnikova; Toubab by Florian Dietrich; Le Prince by Lisa Bierwirth; The Ordinaries by Sophie Linnenbaum; Till The End Of The Night by Christoph Hochhäusler; and Sisi & I by Frauke Finsterwalder.

The line-up also includes five documentaries -- Love, Deutschmarks And Death by Cem Kaya; Nasim by Arne Büttner and Ole Jacobs; Republic Of Silence by Diana El Jeiroudi; Iron Butterfiles by Roman Liubyi; and Hao Are You by Dieu Hao Do.

All films come with English subtitles, plus Thai subtitles on selected films.

The festival will take place at Goethe-Institut, Doc Club & Pub and River City Bangkok in Bangkok; Thai Film Archive in Salaya, Nakhon Pathom; Class Cafe in Nakhon Ratchasima; June Art Home in Phitsanulok; Dude, Movie in Chiang Mai; Muang Thong Rama in Phayao; and Lorem Ipsum Space in Hat Yai, Songkhla.
