The town of Dan Sai in Loei will host the annual Bun Luang and Phi Ta Khon Festival from July 7-9. Influenced by a Buddhist folktale, the celebration will transport worshippers back in time to when Prince Vessandorn, one of Buddha's past lives, returned to the palace after meditation. People came out to greet him at the entrance as spirits had accompanied him from the forest to the city.

On the first day, the Phra Upakhut procession will head from Wat Phon Chai to the Mun River to collect white stones from the riverbed and villagers will participate in an alms-giving ceremony.

The official opening and firing of bamboo rockets will take place on the second day as folks wear colourful ghost masks to participate in a grand procession that will march from the Dan Sai District Office to Wat Phon Chai. On the last day, villagers will gather at Wat Phon Chai and listen to 13 consecutive Buddhist sermons.
