Official description

Located well away from the metropolis along Ratchaphruek Road, Villa de Bear is an expansive seven-rai establishment with its own bedtime back story: Villy, the restaurant’s armless black bear mascot, inherited his uncle’s Teddy bear factory but was apparently more passionate about spreading joy with food than toys. He turned the factory into a food village, honouring the venue’s history by designing thread-, button- and gear-themed dining halls.

Villy also filled his restaurant with inspiration, in a literal sense. At Villa de Bear, you can find inspirational quotes on the walls, the ground, the pillow you’re leaning on, and on the tiny ribbon around your special drink. Quirky potted plants and figurines add to the interior’s warmth. If that’s not enough to make you gush a little on the inside, then clearly it’s your turn to sit on the “Villy” couches, the best seats in the house. For dinnertime on a clear night, you might prefer choosing from the wide array of outdoor or semi-outdoor seating, where you’ll be able to get up close to a live band.

The Menu

The menu is that of a quintessential Thai-fusion family restaurant. Villa de Bear’s edge, however, is presentation. You’ll enjoy an appetiser like the Crispy Villa de Bear spring rolls (B260) more because the bite-sized pieces have been diagonally cut and tossed in a miniature basket than you will the mind-blowing gastronomy of spinach and cheese or ham and cheese. But this doesn’t mean taste is completely out the window. We feel that the popular main dish, Squid ink spaghetti with crabmeat in pink sauce (B290), is deserving of its spot on the recommended list. Fragrant, spicy, and generous with crabmeat and garlic, this dish is perfectly executed to the “Thai taste”. We are only confused as to why the colour pink is in the name. The sauce is most definitely red, unless our eyes (and camera lens) deceive us.

The Green curry chicken with roti (B190), presented like chips and guac, was also quite enjoyable and not outrageously spicy. We were less impressed by the olive oil and balsamic vinegar-drenched Soft-shell crab salad (B320). As for the obligatory Western dish, we went with the beef De Bear double cheeseburger (B450), and definitely recommend juicing it up with the included Tex-Mex sauce. The side of chilli-cheese fries, on the other hand, were better than your average fries.

At a place like this, you can count on gimmicky drinks and desserts to tie your meal with bow. Front of cinema (B280) is a performance starring a white rum-based strawberry and peach cocktail, caramel popcorn and the special effects of dry ice. For dessert, get a taste of Villy’s ideal “barbecue” with the Fantasy BBQ toast dip (B235), featuring fruit and toast shish kebabs, served with a side of chocolate and strawberry sauces, and vanilla ice cream with honey and whipped cream.

Insider’s Tip

The restaurant accepts no reservations. Its 200 parking spaces somehow manage to become filled, especially on weekends and holidays, so consider carpooling or taking a taxi from Bang Wa BTS station, which is about five minutes away. There’s a 10% discount on the meal if it’s your birthday, plus or minus one day. Regardless, expect to hear a joyous breakout of Happy Birthday. Every day is someone’s birthday.

Value & Verdict

Sometimes gimmicks work. This is one of those times. Humour your date by heading out of central Bangkok to eat decent food among armless bears and inspirational adages. Don’t forget to take photos, otherwise you weren’t there.
