The Phuket Baba Wedding 2013 is a platform for lovebirds who wish to be wed in traditional style. The event will take place from June 22 to 24.

Any local and foreign couples who are seeking unique ways to tie the knot are invited to wed in the traditional, sophisticated Peranakan style in Phuket next month.

Organised by the Thai Peranakan Association in cooperation with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Phuket City and the Blue Elephant Cooking School & Restaurant Phuket, the Phuket Baba Wedding 2013 event will take place in Phuket's old town, renowned for its historical and magnificent architecture and atmosphere, from June 22 to 24.

"Baba" or Peranakan refer to the descendants of the late 19th century Chinese immigrants who settled in Phuket about 200 years ago. A Baba wedding was traditionally a statement of wealth and social standing of the family, and was regarded as one of the most important ceremonies in a Baba's life.

The wedding procession will take place on June 23 along Thalang Road, which will be decorated with Chinese lanterns and floral displays, showcasing the beauty of a Peranakan traditional wedding.

The mansion has been designated as the "House of the groom" for this year's event.

Those attending the wedding celebration will also have a chance to sample rare delights like tumi curry (fish curry), hu shae (Baba salad) and kao niew heep (pressed sticky rice with egg custard) as part of their wedding feast.

The Phuket Baba Wedding was first organised in Phuket in 2005 and has since become the town's major annual event to showcase and conserve Peranakan culture, its wedding rituals, the traditional attire of the bride and groom, and authentic Baba cuisine.

The groom would wear a white suit to reflect his social standing of doing business with foreigners. The bride would wear "Baju Panjang", an elegant long dress made from hand-printed and embroidered cloth and adorned with the family jewels. The wedding ceremony itself consists of a tea ceremony, which will be held at Phuket's famous Hongsyok Mansion, which has been designated as the "House of the bride".

For lovebirds who would like to take part in this unique wedding ceremony, the registration fee is 39,900 baht per couple, inclusive of three nights' accommodation and a full three-day programme in Phuket.
