Celebrating 240 years of American independence

The American community of Bangkok will celebrate 240 years of American independence with a traditional picnic at Nist International School, Sukhumvit 15, on July 2 from noon to 8pm.

Organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand (Amcham), the "Independence Day Picnic" will be a fun-filled day featuring live music, good food, cold drinks and entertainment for children and adults.

As in previous years, it will offer a full American barbecue with burgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken wings and pie served by crowd favourites such as Orn the Road, Roadhouse Barbeque, Bourbon Street, Hooters and Sunrise Taco, as well as lighter options from the likes of Absolute Fit Food. Drinks will also be available.

Live bands including Ample Soul, Matthew Fischer and the Fishes, Southern Cross, Peter Driscoll and the Cruisers and Sticky Fingers will be playing rock, blues and folk throughout the day.

Children will enjoy Mattel Land, bouncy castles, tug of war, the water-balloon toss and gunnysack races. Aspiring cooks will have a chance to test their chops at a chilli cook-off, while foodies can show their speed and stamina at a pie-eating contest.

The highlight will be the raffle featuring prizes such as airline tickets to the US provided by United and Delta, hotel stays, jewellery and meal vouchers. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Amcham Thailand Charitable Foundation’s efforts to improve the quality of education in Thailand.

Tickets cost 200 baht (300 baht at the door and free for children under 12 years old) and can be purchased from the Amcham office at GPF Witthayu Tower on Witthayu Road. There will be shuttle vans running from Manhattan Hotel to the top of the soi.
