Smokin' Hickory!
The ribs specialists
Well, we do feel rather bad, but it definitely wasn't Vegetarian Festival when we visited Hickory, a smoking hot barbecue restaurant on Sukhumvit Soi 11 that cohabits a space with the jazzy Wolff's Bar. And somehow classy cocktails, walls adorned with pictures of the all-time jazz-favourites and Bourbon flavoured ribs work really well together.
First to come were the 12-piece Smoked buffalo wings (B290). Literally wolffed down. Do you know why we loved these so much? They tasted of chorizo! In what world you'd want chicken to taste like chorizo beats us but smokey chorizo tasting chicken is just about the most heavenly thing you can have, especially when you dip it in Hickory's homemade blue cheese sauce. Yum. Followed with some celery and carrot slices (dipped in the blue cheese sauce) to make you feel a little healthy and you've got the whole balanced diet thing on fleek. Sort of.
Then came the locally raised Kurobuta 1/2 rack of ribs (B940) -- recommended to feed two to three. These were Bourbon flavoured and sweet, and they fell straight off the bone and into our mouths. You could taste that they had been fed a good diet of sweet potatoes, too. Apparently, Hickory smoke these ribs fresh everyday for five - six hours using real hickory wood sourced straight from Texas, USA. Authentic AF! To complement the ribs, we had some delicious potato Wedges (B120) which we dipped in Hickory homemade aioli -- we ended up taking a bottle of this home. It was that good. The Baked potato (B120) was another side we tried and the smoked and salty exterior and soft interior dipped in butter, cream cheese and chives was one of the sweeter moments of the night. You can't go wrong with a baked potato.
There was barely any room left for more, and of course there were doggie bags, but we did manage to try the Pulled pork sandwich (B320), which came with wedges and coleslaw. The quality of the smoked and tender pork is what really makes a trip to Hickory worthwhile. But, that said, we did need the whole of Vegetarian Festival to recover from the meat overload. g
