The small, 30-seat eatery with a bright red-hued interior is the new El Mariachi Taqueria, a Mexican eatery that closed down on Srinakharin Road last year.

Owned and run by an ardent Mexican chef and his Thai wife, El Mariachi has been treasured by Mexican food fans for its homestyle fare, which honours the freshness and genuine taste of the ingredients.

Tortillas -- both corn and flour, salsa and chilli sauces are produced in-house, according to a family recipe. Herbs and spices are imported to ensure the profound essence of the originals.

At this six-month-old joint, the menu lists a selection of classics, as well as the chef's signatures.

An order of the best-selling mucho queso (200 baht) featured seasoned melted cheese to be mixed with your choice of meat and served with corn tortillas and a platter of dipping sauces.

Bathing in the warm, freshly-made cheese sauce was diced chicken, which went nicely with the crispy corn chips and dipping sauces (fresh tomato salsa, habanero chilli and jalapeño), added a fiery touch to the bites.

For more substantial entrées, we sampled tacos de carnitas (240 baht). It featured four open-faced soft tacos topped with slow-cooked pulled pork, freshly chopped onion and fresh coriander. The taco did not need any condiments.

For those looking for a beefy meal, don't miss the enchilada carnitas (310 baht). The dish featured loose rolls of soft tortilla that revealed a hearty filling of beef loin chunks underneath a rich cheese sauce. The velvety black bean mash and arroz rojo helped tone down the saltiness of the sauce.

Nicely complementing the meal was horchata, a refreshing and fragrant cinnamon-vanilla rice milk.
