The 35-year-old began her musical career as a vocalist with the Chicago group Bumpus and spent six years touring, writing and recording with the band before leaving in 2001 to become a solo artist.

She has released five EPs and three studio albums _ Happenstance (2004), Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart (2008) and Chesapeake (2011).

She's toured with The Swell Season, Ray LaMontagne, Ryan Adams, Sara Bareilles and Adam Cohen, opened for David Gray at Madison Square Garden, been a guest on Pete Townshend's In The Attic Series, and shared the stage at Carnegie Hall with R.E.M. and Patti Smith.

Recently she's played with Steve Earle for a Woody Guthrie tribute show alongside Allen Toussaint and The Wood Brothers after her own headlining tours throughout the US, Asia and Europe for the past eight months.

Her collaborations have included songs with Jason Mraz, Mandy Moore, Dan Wilson and Katharine McPhee and she's lent vocals to the works of Rhett Miller, Bright Eyes, Dave Matthews, Ray LaMontagne and Ryan Adams.

Of late, her song You Won't Let Me has reached the top of the Australian charts as the first single for The Voice (Australia) winner Karise Eden.

Her song I Don't Want To Be Your Mother is featured in the movie Hope Springs.

Past placements have included songs in the films Prime, Bella, Monster-In-Law, In Her Shoes and Hotel For Dogs.

Her songs have also appeared on several TV shows including Pretty Little Liars, Grey's Anatomy, ER, The L Word, Brothers And Sisters and How I Met Your Mother.
