Culture Collective Studio, an English-speaking theatre in Bangkok, will premiere Deathtrap, a comic thriller by American playwright Ira Levin, on June 23 at 7pm. Seven more shows will be staged on June 24-26 and June 30-July 3, at 8pm (except June 30 when the show will begin at 7pm).

Directed by Loni Berry, the two-act show will feature five delightful actors that represent the multicultural essence of the theatre’s mission. FC Nieuwoudt (South African) portrays the once celebrated playwright who is now so desperate for another hit play that he is willing to kill his student, played by Sirisak Pituck (Thai), to steal his work.

The wealthy wife, played by Cherene Knop (South African), continues to support her husband in spite of their empty marriage. The family attorney, played by Ross Cain (UK), trusts no one and the murder-solving psychic, played by Cecilia Belletti (Italy), has a difficult time figuring it all out.

Written in 1978, the play with many plot twists continues to hold the record as the longest running comedy-thriller on Broadway. It was later made into a movie starring Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve.

Berry is the owner and artistic director of Culture Collective Studio. He has over 30 years of experience as a teacher and director, having taught acting, directing and play-writing at some of the most prestigious universities in the US. Many of his former students are successful actors on Broadway and in Hollywood.

He has written and directed plays at several professional theatres and is a professor at Bangkok University.

The 80-seat black box theatre is on Charoen Krung 70, next to Chatrium Hotel Riverside and Shrewsbury International School. Tickets cost 800 and 1,000 baht (1,500 baht, including dinner at Chatrium Hotel).
