Playing with bubbles is a fond part of childhood for many, but when one reaches maturity, the activity is often left as just a memory. For Fan Yang, in his 50s, however, the enjoyment has remained with him.

Over the years, Yang has earned an international recognition as a bubble master and will perform for the second time in Thailand in the “Bubble Legendary Show”, which will take place from April 21-24.

“The show will be very interactive,” says Yang. “There are many bubble tricks I’ve never performed before. We have also created a 3D laser to bring a supernova and black hole to the show. What is interesting about 3D lasers is that it breaks the law of physics. Whereas light travels in a straight line, 3D lasers can bend in the atmosphere. This together with bubbles creates something very cool that I want to show the audience.”

It was at the age of six that Yang fell in love with bubbles as he was fascinated by bubbles formed in a brook near his house. “I love the beautiful colour of light when it reflects on bubbles. It makes me want to keep them alive for a very long time,” said the Vietnamese-Hungarian.

Yang has always kept a picture of bubbles in various stages of the production process ever since he turned 18, when he began to experiment with different liquid solutions, trying to improve the quality of bubbles.

“To make the bubble big and long-lasting is all about science. Fluid mechanics is the first factor in understanding the molecule of composition,” says Yang. “I was self educated and have conducted many experiments. It took many trials and it wasn’t easy.

“When I started taking bubbles seriously, many questioned why I was doing it, but I was fascinated and flooded with passion. I think there is a whole new world to this and I want to bring the joy to people with bubbles.”

Although he has a Guinness World Record for creating a big enough bubble to fit 181 people inside, the idea of being a bubble artist and fronting a bubble show never occurred to him. It came to him when he successfully developed the bubble formula and was able to make it spin and bounce. He then demonstrated to friends and people around him and began his first show on the streets in Europe. This earned him the opportunity to showcase his skill on TV and later developed it to bigger shows.

“Bubble film has an elasticity that can be used to create art so I wanted to be able to command and manipulate it. I wanted to enhance the lives of bubbles and make them live longer.”

Although he’s spent over 20 years with bubbles, he still enjoys exploring new possibilities in whipping up excitement in the show.

“I realise that I’m just at the beginning because there are many things I still can do with bubbles. I just have to make my imagination fly,” says Yang. “I want to bring bubbles to a wider audience and to people around the world.”

The fragility of bubbles is often the most challenging thing, Yang explains, as the particle can easily burst as the film is so thin. Even the bubbles he makes now from the formula he created still don't always work the way he wants. However, Yang relishes the challenge.

Asked if the show is designed for children, Yang explains: “People say bubbles are for children, but in my experience, adults and kids can enjoy them equally. While kids only like seeing bubbles fly, adults tend to understand the art I make as well.”

“Bubble Legendary” by Fan Yang will take place at Muang Thai Rachadalai Theatre from Apr 21-24. Tickets from 500-2,000 baht available at ThaiTicketMajor.
