Official description

To mark the 80th birthday of Rear Admiral ML Usni Pramoj, one of the principal educators and figures involved in the promotion of interest in classical music in Thailand, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra will dedicate a special performance at the Thailand Cultural Centre this Saturday evening to him.

ML Usni has been involved for over half a century in the development of countless scores by professional Thai musicians who are currently active both here and abroad. He commands such great respect from past pupils of his that they affectionately refer to their musical father figure as Ajarn Mom.

The programme for Saturday’s concert, to be conducted by Vanich Potavanich, will feature solo performances by three other prominent members in the orchestra’s ranks.

Clarinettist Apichet Phayonlert will showcase ML Usni’s well-known skills as a composer with a performance of his Concertino For Clarinet And Strings.

Co-principal oboist Chanannat Meenanan will play the more mellow-sounding cor anglais in Copland’s emotionally moving and reflective Quiet City, a work of exquisite calm and beauty, with the BSO’s principal trumpeter, Lertkiat Chongjirajitra, also playing solo in this piece.

The concert is due to begin at 5pm. Tickets cost 300, 500 and 800 baht and can be purchased at the BSO office in the Alma Link Building, Phloenchit Road (call 02-255-6617/8) or the BSO shop at the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) at the Pathumwan intersection (call 02-214-3757).
