Official description

The Japan Foundation Asia Center presents "Mode Of Liaisons" exhibition featuring paintings, sculptures, films/videos, installations and performances by nearly 20 artists at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre until July 2.

Curated by Pichaya Suphavanij, the exhibition is part of "Condition Report", a collaborative art project with curators from Japan and Southeast Asian countries with the objectives to incubate young curators through working in collaboration with senior curators.

The concept for this show is rooted from the biological standpoint selecting the works of art from the senior curators’ previous selections in other cities, and stemming out with the new artworks selected specifically for Bangkok to reach a conceptual whole.

Calling all curators

It aims to look at the meaning that is not only embedded in the artworks, but also the ecosystem in which the artworks originated. It can be identified as the roots of the artists, the communities where the works were conceived, and the network systems that branch, maintain, and transfer the artworks in relation to time, space, and people.

This concept views a work of art as a living organism with appendages that move and adapt the meaning of its existence. Moreover, it aims to explore the essence hidden in the interaction between networks of each different work, which can be led to the exploration of further meaningful relationships.

As the exhibition focuses on collaborations of meanings rather than individual interpretations, it uses the perspectives within Southeast Asia through perceptions of curators and artists in the field of visual arts that address local complexities.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is on Pathumwan intersection and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10am-9pm.
