Cruising through the jungle

Guru experiences Chiang Mai's newest adrenaline-filled attraction first hand

As an adventure nut, nothing gives me more joy than to be scared out of my own skin for a few seconds. Riding a jungle coaster and zip-lining through Chiang Mai's lush jungle seems to fit that bill perfectly.

The recently opened attraction at Pongyang has already garnered lots of attention, albeit not all in a positive light. If you google it, the first few items that ping up are about the accident that happened not too long ago. After doing some research, my worries were put to rest. Let's just say it involved one of those selfie addicts who couldn't follow the safety rules and was being a total idiot. Safety is their priority; having been there and done it myself, I can tell you first hand that the ride itself is far from dangerous.

Arriving at the sight just before noon, it was already bustling with excitement from tourists and locals alike. There are lots of different packages to choose from depending on how much time you have on your hands.

I headed straight to the 2-seater jungle coaster where the staff explained in detail the safety procedure. The ride takes about five minutes in total, which to be honest, in roller coaster-time is surprisingly long. There were enough dips, twists and turns to make you want to go for a second round. It was fun, but far from scary -- making it suitable for both children and adults. If you're not a fast and furious type, there are levers you can push to slow your cart down.

Next on my list was Tarzanning it through the jungle. All the equipment and gear are brand new and they'll get you prepped and ready with a safety helmet and a climbing harness. The zip-lining guides were very experienced; they were as comfortable gliding through the trees as I was eating an ice cream sitting down. Zooming past the dense jungle, high above the ground and taking a breather on tree tops was an amazing feeling. What really gets your adrenaline rushing though, is definitely their longest line of 800 meters in which you get to fully appreciate one of the most magnificent sights of Chiang Mai's natural beauty, one your camera could never do justice to.

TOP TIPS

• To fully immerse yourself in this jungle experience, leave your camera and your phone in the provided lockers. That way you get to really appreciate with your eyes rather than through a viewfinder.

• Although Pongyang is not far from the centre of Chiang Mai, do spare a lot of travelling time (a good hour) getting there and back as there are a lot of winding roads.

• To avoid queues, call ahead for information and get there before noon.

• Don't wear shoes that might fall off easily, you won't want to be climbing all the way down just to pick your flip flops up.

• Currently there are special promotions: Jungle coaster is priced at B150 per person/ride, jungle coaster + zip-lining (12 stations) is priced at B800 per person.
